An unexpected gift

we had intended to bring you a recipe for cranberry-pistachio cookies today.

However, we are sitting in a hotel room in Longview, Washington as I type this. We had two wonderful days in Portland, teaching cooking classes at Bob's Red Mill. (They sold out so fast, as soon as they were announced, that we didn't have a chance to tell you about them here.) After the last class, the three of us went to the Hawthorne Fish House and ate gluten-free fish and chips with two of Danny's best friends from high school. It was a lovely evening. we left Portland to make it home at a reasonable hour.

and so, we are here. Away from the computer and the recipe I was going to give you.

Tomorrow.

While we were eating fish and chips, we received this news: The New York Times named our cookbook one of the best of the year.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/08/dining/08books.html?src=twrhp&scp=1&sq=Best%20cookbooks&st=cse

We honestly don't know what to say, other than thank you. Danny and I are in happy, happy shock. Thank you to everyone who has bought the book so far. We feel honored that all those years of work brought us here.

Even if here is a cheap hotel room in Longview that smells of stale smoke.

See you tomorrow with cookies.

Rest of Post.

I just saw that in the article! Congratulations, and may Longview be nice to you.
May your new year bring just as many good things!

You know you've arrived when there's the smell of stale smoke. People pay extra for that in these days when smoking is so rare!
Great, great news. World domination is just around the corner. Have a great Christmas, all three of you.

Big, big congratulations! I don't need to be gluten-free, but I so respect what you do for the gluten-free community.

You know I am a believer, and now the official arbiters are coming into the fold, too. Yippee, and then some.

Kisses all around!

What a great Christmas surprise! I'm so happy for you! You deserve it too--this is more than just a cookbook with great food, you've really made it your mission to help people by giving them two of the greatest kinds of gifts: knowledge and hope. Your obvious desire to serve others really shines through. Thank you for that. Everyone in this world deserves to feel they are worthy and loved and I think (pardon the pun) that you both bring a little bit of that to the worldwide table with your recipes and writing.

Congratulations to you both! I'm on my way to pick my copy up here in London and can't wait wait wait to actually walk OUT of the bookstore with it as opposed to sitting in a corner and slowly looking through each page as I was forced to do while visiting the US.

Well done you guys!!!

All of us with allergies / intolerances are are lucky to have your book on our shelves and I'm glad you are getting the recognition.

If you choose to extend your tour across the pond, know you are welcome!
Let me know, I'll hook you guys up with whatever you want / need.

Congratulations!!! You so deserve this! I have your cookbook on my bedside table and read a little bit every night. It's like any good book - I don't want to read it too fast because I don't want it to end!

Wonderful news about the NYT recognition of your book. Hawthorne Fish House is my go to restaurant in Portland. I wish we had its equivalent here in the SF bay area. What a concept--all the fish is dredged in rice flour so all of it is gluten free! It is so fun to go there in a group and not have to have "the discussion" with the waiter but just order off the menu like everyone else.

Conga-rats to you both! {Insert .jpg of a line of dancing rats, a hat of fruit on the leader...;^) }

You've worked so hard at something you both love, and it's joyous that you've found people to share it with, and income from what you love best.

Now I need to go make GF gingerbread moons (I moved -- Lord only knows where the cookie cutters are...) and I hope you are getting out of that smoky hotel room and back to your snug house!

There isn't many GF options in Longview but if you have a chance you should check out the Country Village. It's Longviews health food store it has a HUGE selection of GF stuff. The biggest I've ever seen for such a little town.

Portland sure does have some good gf food! I love Hawthorne Fishhouse! The last time I was there, my little niece was stealing my prawns one at a time without me noticing. In the end, I'd only eaten 2 and she'd eaten the rest! There's also Mississippi Pizza with gf crusts and New Cascadia Bakery, a dedicated gf facility.

Congratulations!!! I wish I'd have known you were going to be in Portland. I'd have loved for you to come and see our gluten free wholesale bakery, which is just about ten minutes away from Hawthorne Fish House. PS-If anyone at the table had a gluten free burger, it was our bun.

At 5:22 AM, Blogger Unknown said...

I am so pumped about your book - congrats!

Can you tell Bob that I love his stuff (I assume it's Bob) and can he pleeeeeeease start shipping to France so I don't have to eat glorified corn starch with guar gum anymore? That's what we get in the way of mixes here. It's so hard to be GF in France, and not just because of the croissants.

I'm a newcomer to Gluten-Free Girl and the Chef. I am LOVING you!! I don't have an allergy to gluten, or CD, however I do have a rare type of arthritis. I have been reading up on it, and I found that sugar and gluten are the 2 worst things for inflammation. So, 2 weeks ago I started a gluten free life. I have already seen a major improvement in my inflammation! You have given me a fresh take on eating well on a gluten free diet. I hate that word, "diet." My gluten free "lifestyle." There! That sounds better! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Sad I missed you here in Portland. I saw the classes posted at BRM but couldn't afford them. I kept thinking you'd post about doing a picnic like in other cities then the next thing I see is that you've come and gone without anything for us poor folk :(
