Colorado book tour

picnic
gluten-free potluck in San Francisco, early October

In less than 48 hours, we will be on an airplane to Denver.

Lu has been walking around the house saying "Airplane! Airplane!" Danny has been grinning wide and tearing up at times.

You see, Colorado is Danny's home. Here is too, of course, and we're going to be living in this place for the rest of our lives. But Colorado is where Danny learned to ski and pull pranks, make friends, and become a person. Colorado is where he first learned he wanted to cook food and where he became a chef.

And now he is returning home as a cookbook author, with his wife and daughter.

There are no words to say how excited we are to see some of you there soon.

Come on out and help us celebrate the good life, gluten-free.

fig tart, gluten-free
Irvin Lin's fig and mascarpone tart, gluten-free (recipe here)

We will be in Denver doing public events on Monday, November 15th and Tuesday, November 16th.

Monday, November 15th

The good folks at Udi's Gluten-Free have helped us to plan this tour. They are also helping to sponsors. We love you, Udi's Gluten-Free!

On Monday evening, we are having a giant celebration of the book and the good life, gluten-free, at Udi's Stapleton restaurant, from 6:30 to 8:30. We're having tapas-style food, music, wine and gluten-free beer for purchase, and a cooking demo from Danny. It's going to be a GREAT party.

I'm both sad and happy to say that this event sold out 2 hours after it was announced. The wait list is long, as well, but you never know. If this is the only night you can come to see us, send an email to @glutenfree@udisfood.

Tuesday, November 16th

I'm very much honored to say that we will be doing a reading/signing for our cookbook at the Tattered Cover (the Colfax store). This is one of my favorite bookstores in the world and we think you'll love it too.

The reading is at 7:30, free and open to all. I'll be reading some essays. Danny might read out some recipes ("1/4 teaspoon fresh fine-chopped rosemary"). We'll both be talking about food and love and how to live gluten-free, joyfully. Let's have a conversation and some laughter together.

gluten-free cream puffs
gluten-free cream puffs from Zest Bakery(people, if you can, buy these!)

We'll be in Breckenridge and its surrounding towns on November 17th and 18th.

Wednesday, November 17th

We are happy to be doing a signing at the Borders bookstore in Dillon, just outside of Breckenridge. We'll be there from 4 to 5 pm, signing books and answering questions. Come on by!

Thursday, November 18th

This might be the event that means the most to Danny, for nostalgic, home-town reasons.

Mi Casa restaurant in Breckenridge is hosting a big party in our honor, from 5 to 8 pm.

Look at this food you could be eating:

chorizo fundido
rajas fundido
fresh guacamole
beef loin tostadas with chile arbol chimichurri
chile glazed shrimp tostadas with black bean puree
pork pibil tostadas with pickled red onions
lobster and shrimp ceviche
chipotle-lime marinated shrimp

plus a complimentary margarita (or wine or gluten-free beer)

All this for $16.25.

Come on out and help us celebrate in Danny's hometown.

andrea's yes
the incredible Andrea of Superhero Designs, who showed up with yes written on her wrist

It wouldn't be right to come to Colorado and not have another gluten-free potluck and gathering. Our experiences in New York and San Francisco were so extraordinary — the food, the people, the laughter, the new friendships — that we want to do this again.

(By the way, all the photos you see from this post are from our time in San Francisco. Check out the links beneath each photo for recipes and more goodness.)

Saturday, November 20th at 1 pm

We're having a potluck in Boulder and you are all invited.

Bring a dish of your favorite gluten-free food! (Please label it with all the ingredients inside, so people with other food allergies can eat safely as well.) If you can, bring some plates, forks, knives, and napkins. We're having a party.

Thank you a hundred times to Laura Levy, from Laura's Best Recipes. When we put out the call for help finding a spot for a potluck in Boulder, she spent the morning contacting possible places. Thanks to her, we have a gathering space.

First Congregational Church
1128 Pine Street, Boulder, CO 80302

We love any place that puts on the home page of its website: "Everyone is welcome here: believers and agnostics, conventional Christians and questioning skeptics, people of all sexual orientations, the despairing and the hopeful, those of all races and cultures, and those of all classes and abilities."

What a wonderful space for our gathering.

The church has a large events room — we can fit up to 160 people in there — with a large kitchen. That means stoves and ovens for warming up your dishes, if you wish.

The church charges a small fee for renting the space and a cleaning deposit. So, if all of you who come feel like chipping in a dollar or two, we'd be grateful!

At both the potlucks we have held in New York and San Francisco, joy held the day. Everyone gathered was so happy to be in a room full of great folks and food. Those of you who are gluten-free, imagine the feeling to walk into a room with tables full of food, all of which you can eat.

Let's celebrate together. Wear the word YES or IMAGINE on you somewhere, if you will.

And bring your copy of our cookbook!

We just can't wait to meet you! I think Danny might burst in the next 2 days. Come on out and welcome him home.

Hi,

We would love to meet you at the Boulder pot-luck and bring a few samples of our New Planet Gluten Free Beers (maybe even a sample of our pale ale still in testing phase). Also you should be able to try us at the Stapleton Udi's event. What a great week you have in store. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

Accckkk! I'm scheduled to fly home to New Mexico Thursday night, so I'll miss you again! Otherwise, I would most certainly join your potluck. When will you return to Boulder? (Or New Mexico?)

I can hardly wait to see you here in Boulder! Just to be sure, you wrote Saturday Nov 19th, and the 19th is Friday. Just want to clarify want the plan is. I sincerely hope you come and visit me at the Farmer's Market before the potluck! I'm getting off early to come to the potluck!
Thanks!

I just wanted to let you know that I stumbled onto your blog today through an article that popped up on Google News. I have a significant gluten intolerance (they say it isn't celiac-apparently the test came back negative-but I'm not so sure). But it has been a huge struggle for me because I have a hard time finding GOOD & YUMMY recipes. I am soooo excited to try your recipes. A real person making delicious gluten-free food. YEAH! And thank you so much! I am so excited to look and to try, and to enjoy food again! Thank you!!

Enjoy your trip to Colorado! I just moved here (to Seattle) with my family from Boulder one year ago and miss it. Your enthusiasm for this area has helped me tremendously with the adjustment to GF and to Seattle. So, thanks and enjoy the sunshine.

Shauna, Met you/tasted your food at IFBC Seattle. Colorado is my home too. Reading this post made me homesick! I know you and Danny will have a great time there.

Can you share the pg# of the pizza on the cover of your book? Recently did a post about Gluten Intolerance on my blog (sacatomato) and had this question. Thanks much!

I stumbled upon your blog sometime ago (I am a blog junkie- read them, don't write one!) and just adored your love story. Your story is so sweet and real, definitely a chick-flick in the making! I hope you are seriously considering writing a screenplay. Well, a while back I noticed a post on my husband's FB page with a reference to your blog and it turns out he grew up with your husband in Summit County, Pat Duffy. Small world! Just reading your post about your husband's excitement over going back home to the mountains reminded me of Patrick. Something about those mountains never leaves them no matter where they live. Patrick gets just as giddy about going back, although it is never near often enough! Just thought I'd share with you. Continued good luck with your cookbook and book tour.

Sure wish we could meet you in Boulder but we live in the eastern plains of Colorado, and can't leave our little farm for the time it would take. We'll think of you as we eat our gf goodies here at home!

Shauna,

We're sorry we missed you when you came to Colorado! My fiance and I were planning to come to the potluck, but right before we were headed out, his stomach felt terrible. I don't know what he ate that made him feel so bad, but we were pretty bummed out. It felt like we were back at the place we were in when he was first diagnosed with celiac over a year ago! He felt better by the end of the night, but we're sorry we missed it. I hope you come out again sometime because we would really like the chance to meet you and your husband. I've used so many of your recipes! And will again...this week actually, for Thanksgiving! Can't wait to try the Brussels sprouts salad; they are one of my favorite veggies. I should probably send you pictures of the pie and dinner rolls I made from your recipes last Thanksgiving. I should also probably stop rambling. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

-Sarah
