daily food photo: portobello mushrooms

portobello mushrooms

When I walked into the restaurant with the Chef's coffee warming my hand, I saw a case of these on the bar.

They gleamed.

"Sweetie, what are you doing with these?" I called out to him in the kitchen.

He came around the corner, wiping his hands, a gleeful grin on his face.

"Portobello vinaigrette, for the fish special."

I gave him a kiss, always amazed at how his mind works. Five minutes before, he had no idea what he would serve that night. He lives in the food moment. These had arrived. He found his idea.

Later, I asked him how he made it. But in that moment, I took out my camera instead. Seeing them in front of me, I was reminded of just how much the world offers.

"Wherever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting —
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things."

— Mary Oliver, "Wild Geese"

Lovely earthy photos last two days. Heading out to breakfast, I think a portabella omelett is on the menu. Thanks, Shauna.

Mary-Sue, Thank you! The video of Joseph Campbell you posted on your website reinvigorated me this morning. I may just follow your lead.

Shauna -
Right befor Thanksgiving I was told to avoid gluten, and I was intolerant of both gluten and gliaden.

It has been a HUGE adjustment for me, even though I have over the last 2 years completely revamped my diet to real food, and organic when I can get it without spending an arm and a leg. I have to tell you though that the gluten/gliaden thing has thrown me, and I've been craving all of the gluten-replacements far more than I should. It's past time to return to the eggs and veggies and mostly organic fare.

I religiously researched online, and utilized blogs and internet sites to help me. The greatest comfort has been seeing that a joyful life, albeit with a bit of work, can be had! I also realize how fortunate I am to have so many options here in Atlanta with several health food stores with a wide variety of gluten-free options. It was tough to be back in Iowa for the holidays and continue to tell my mother that I wasn't eating ANYTHING with flour.

I caught up on the last few weeks of your blog, and I have to say I had read the shopping cart comment. I actually thought it was a harmless fantasy to dream of others lives and help you see where you are, or would like to be. You seem to be a very sensitve person, and I appreciate your awareness and mea culpas.

However, you cannot know how everyone will react to your comments, and I hope you are not discouraged and continue to support your blog. I look forward to reading your recipes and experiences with the chef, and your love of San Francisco. Please have heart and keep venturing into the blogosphere.

I have been out of town for the weekend and thought I would pop over and get a wee peek and catch up with Shauna. I sat here for almost a half hour reading, and reading, and reading.
How you touch my soul. How what you write has me nodding in agreement, smiling with enthusiasm.
We are on our way to Tucson on Wednesday for a vacation. I love that you were just there. I totally love the Desert Museum. Our daughter is going to spend a day in the kitchen of Janos Restaraunt with Janos himself (a personal friend and what a good person to do this with a 12 yr. old!). Will she still want to be a chef after experiencing kitchen life for a day? We are going to spend 9 glorious days with friends and extended family...you have made me so excited to get on the plane.
I love your post about how you and Chef live and your philosophy of money and priorities.
My husband and I have made a lot of the same choices...ours based around being present with our children. We have a more than ten yr. old van (has to be a van because of our ceramics biz) covered with bumper stickers. I love Value Village and it's my main store. I know where all the Value Villages are across the US. One of my favorites is in Fargo, ND. I may own two homes but I am by no means a cash wealthy person. I have my kitchen aid that I bought for my baking business over 12 yrs. ago. It's still going strong and so am I. I got married without a wedding ring. It took us about 4 yrs. before we had enough money to have them made.
I love your blog. You keep reminding us all about the fabulous journey of love and life.
Someday I'm going to walk up to you and give a warm hug and say "Thank you Shauna, thank you. Would you like to go have a cup of tea?".

Trig,

That doesn't happen very often around here! Thanks.

Theresa,

I'm so thrilled that my blog could be a help for you. That's why I'm here.

Madre-Terra,

I hope you had a wonderful time in Tucson! And anytime, I would take that hug and cup of tea. You bet.

Melting Wok,

Thank you. I loved taking that photograph.
