just a little bit

little red Le Creuset, originally uploaded by shaunaforce.

Well, I finally did it. I bought a Le Creuset.

No, not that one. Not ">the one I covet. And I do mean covet. Sometimes I go to kitchen stores and stand in front of the Le Creuset dutch ovens, the large ones, in flame red or kiwi green, and I just dream. Let's be honest, I lust. After a dutch oven. (Something needs to change here.) But at $230 each, it just isn't going to happen any time soon on this teacher's salary. But yesterday, at Larry's Market, while I waited for the #2 bus up the hill, I bought this: a petite cocotte, small enough to fit into the palm of my hand. (I know it looks bigger in the photograph, but that's the point, isn't it?)What on earth is that good for, Shauna--you may be asking. Well, it's adorable. It looks luscious on my metal kitchen shelves, by the window, next to the smoked pimenton. Give me a break, I have a broken foot. I deserve it.

Do I send a tad defensive? Well, maybe. You see, I was having a hard time justifying spending just under twenty dollars for a baby-doll Le Creuset. But then, I read Rachael's marvelous post on roasting garlic, and I no longer felt sheepish for my purchase. Instead, I cooked with it, immediately. I made a tiny pot of roasted garlic in my Le Creuset, and the kitchen filled with the scrumptious, nutty aroma. Soon, I'm going to make mashed potatoes with roasted garlic, buttermilk, and smoked cheddar. Ah.

But not yet. I'm going to be away from the blog for a few days. Why? Shhhhh. It's a secret. You'll find out why, soon. On Sunday, I'll be back with stories, and more recipes.

However, before I go, I have to acknowledge something I just realized when I started writing here: this is my 100th post on Gluten-free Girl. 100 essays, in only a few months. And even though there are archives here from May and June, I didn't really discover the blog as I know it until early July. This means that I have written over 40,000 words in only four months. I can't tell you how proud this makes me. But far more important to me than goal and accomplishment is how many of you I have been able to meet by starting this small endeavor, my fingers clicking on the keyboard, or pressing down on the button on the top of the camera. I've discovered an entire world in only four months, welcomed you into my life with open arms. I can't even imagine what it will be like a year from now. This blog? This is where I feel most alive. Being able to share my joy with you, take photographs for you, and write out my beating heart for you--it's an incredible honor, an ineffable joy. Thank you for reading. I can't thank you enough.

rockfish

So I'll leave you, for this moment, with only this: a simple piece of rockfish, dusted in gluten-free flour, sauteed in butter, with rosemary and chives pressed onto the top. This is what I had for dinner last night. It wasn't complicated, or sophisticated, and I can't even write out a recipe. But it tasted like home, like life opening, like discovery and joy.

Sometimes, all it takes is a little bit to make me happy.

Wow, beautiful shot!!! Red is my favorite color and....great minds think alike because just yesterday I posted about MY porcelain coated cast iron dutch oven - it's cobalt blue and made by Copco.

I can't wait to read about what you plan on cooking in yours.

Oh, I'm so jealous! It's beautiful, just beautiful...and I can imagine it in your kitchen with the light from the skylights showing it off to the rest of the room. Congratulations on 100 posts! Some day, I will have time to go back and read all the archives and see how you've changed over time. Happy 100! And I know at least one blogger who is happy to have you in her daily life! Have a sublimly relaxing evening, Shauna.

See you soon! The rockfish looks great, and I firmly believe that great food doesn't need to be fancy, and the very best food isn't.

I know what you mean about the Le Creuset. I am like that too. And I COVET the lil' mini one that you just bought too.

One of these days, I'm going to splurge. I swear.

You know, you could just buy a cast-iron pan/skillet/griddle/dutch oven for like, 10% of the price.

When I was a very poor student I invested in a le creuset cast iron (sadly not a sexy red enamel) dutch open and a fry pan. A department store where a friend worked had a sale and I got a double discount. That was 15 years ago and as they say 'I have never looked back'. If those pans could talk they would sing a siren's song of curries, soups, vegetable stews, seared fish, tarte tartin, brandied bananas, scrambled eggs for the hoards, hundreds of tortilla espanol's...

Shauna, congratulations on your 100th posting. And I bet it felt really good to buy that little piece of joy! I, too, love the Le Creuset line (it has been a bit of an obsession) and cannot bring myself to spend the money on one. I can't wait to see what the reason for the secrecy is!

Hey there peach. The Le Crueset people would be lucky indeed to have their product in your home. I'm sure. Thank you for yet another from the heart post. I loved it.

And I am beyond thrilled that my silly roasted garlic was the impetus for such a grand purchase.

Have a great time off doing your THANG...

:-)

Congrats on 100, and I fully endorse your lusting after cookware. I recently acuqired my Staub Cocotte and so I understand the elemental bond that can exist between woman and her Dutch Oven. :)

I bought the same, and for the same reason :)

This space is like my kitchen, and Im inviting you in. If you would feel comfortable pointing your finger at me and shouting during a party in my kitchen, well, I'd ask you to leave. And then the rest of us would clear the air and go back to talking and laughing. The same is true here.

Now. Enough of that. Let's talk.
